   Firstly, if you have no experience in the carpet cleaning business, I’d advise that you work for one for the next six months or so doing everything to get some of the work experience that you’ll need to understand and run a carpet cleaning business profitably. Failing that I’d ask advice from someone who has been in the business for awhile and who will not be competing with you (in the next county or a little distant from where you intend to start).

   If this is your first business venture, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE. Ask for someone who has a background in a cleaning business and they’ll try their best to match you with the right counselor.

   The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a carpet cleaning business (a good test for your $15,000 figure) and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market ) and how you’ll get them to find out about and want to use your fabulous carpet cleaning service.

   You have to register your business with the state controller’s office and get any applicable city and county licenses. You will also need a business plan to get a loan from a bank or financial institution. The SCORE counselor can help you get in touch with the people at t he SBA who can help guarantee a loan for you if that is needed.

   You also have to worry about the normal business planning and management issues related to starting up any business.

   If you know about cleaning carpets (or can find out), you might be able to sell this knowledge……and later related products…on line.
   To get started – you’ll need to do some research. I know a great starting point for you…and you don’t need to worry about going into huge debt. )
   It does take work and perseverance, though.
