Starting a small home repair business–looking for tips?

I am asking this for my boyfriend. He is starting this with one other man. They want to do flooring, decks, remodels, etc. They want to incorporate the business. What steps can you recommend to do this properly? All advice is appriciated. Thanks!

We started one many years ago, and you need to make certain you corporate books are in legal order.
depending on the state,you have to take a state licensing exam,and post bond if you pass,you need insurance out the wazoo,they will need to know local building codes,by laws etc,for incorporation,contact a lawyer.
to start you should pick a name for the business then go to assumed names and patten it. then get a ein# from the irs, then
set up a website good luck…..

First, you need to check to see if your state requires a construction contractors license. Search your state agencies for “construction contractor board” to see what the requirements are. Many states require an education component before granting a license (I’m in Oregon and the test was very very easy). You’ll also need liability insurance and a bond before they will grant the license.
Second, I would not recommend incorporation. An LLC will likely give you the personal liability protection you want without all the annual reports and the need for an attorney. Research the differences to determine if an LLC is right for you.
Again, my experience is in Oregon and Washington… the state’s Secretary of State website has the forms online and they can be filled out and filed in less than an hour. My guess is that your state will have a similar system for registering a new LLC.
